England vs. Chile: Previous meetings

Sports Mole looks back on the five previous matches between England and Chile ahead of their meeting on Friday night.

England have not crossed paths with Chile since a clash at Wembley back in 1998.

However, they will meet again at the same venue on Friday night. So, with that in mind, Sports Mole has cast an eye over the five previous meetings between the two nations.

1. England 2-0 Chile, June 1950

This was a famous match in the history of the English national side, largely because it was their first at a World Cup. Walter Winterbottom had taken his squad to Brazil full of optimism and they got off to a positive start against Chile. Blackpool frontman Stan Mortensen broke the deadlock before the break with a header, before Middlesbrough's frontman Wilf Mannion sealed the outcome after the restart. Neither nation qualified for the next stage, though, as Spain won the group.

2. Chile 1-2 England, May 1953

Three years after their first meeting, these teams faced each other again in a friendly contest at the Nacional De Santiago. Tommy Taylor, who would die in the Munich air disaster in 1958, opened the scoring shortly after half-time and then the match was put out of the home side's reach by Nat Lofthouse. However, they did pull one goal back in the closing stages courtesy of Guillermo Diaz.

3. Chile 0-0 England, June 1984

Despite being among the top seeds, England failed to qualify for the European Championships in 1984. So, instead of contesting for the title in France, they travelled to South America instead. Following a win over Brazil, where John Barnes scored that goal and a defeat to Uruguay, Sir Bobby Robson's side ended the summer tour with a goalless draw in Santiago.

4. England 0-0 Chile, May 1989

Chile were invited to compete in the 1989 instalment of the Rous Cup alongside England and their British rivals Scotland. A tube strike meant that just 15,628 fans turned up at Wembley to see the opener between the hosts and the South Americans, although those that did attend might have wished they hadn't! Chances were few and far between as for the second meeting in succession the two nations played out a 0-0 draw. It would be a memorable night for Nigel Clough and John Fashanu, though, who made their international debuts.

5. England 0-2 Chile, February 1998

In the summer of 1998, Marcelo Salas was hot property. He'd been linked with the likes of Manchester United on the back of his performances at that summer's World Cup, but he eventually joined Lazio. Wearing the captain's armband, he lived up to the hype and expectation by scoring both of his country's goals in a 2-0 win. The first was a volley from the edge of the area, while the second was a penalty. Staying with the striker theme, the match also marked Michael Owen's debut as a senior international.
