Robbie Fowler: 'Gareth Southgate should get England job'

Former England striker Robbie Fowler claims that the FA has nothing to lose by appointing Gareth Southgate as manager on a permanent basis.

Former England striker Robbie Fowler has called for Gareth Southgate to be given the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Tuesday's friendly against Spain will be the last of Southgate's four-match spell in interim charge, although the former Under-21 boss is the favourite to become Sam Allardyce's permanent successor.

Fowler believes that the Football Association has nothing to lose by giving the job to Southgate and wants to see a change of tack from previous appointments.

"What is there to lose? It's not as if we've won any tournaments and his appointment would be threatening that. Basically, we've had a bunch of managers who've failed and they've reacted by going out and finding someone who is the exact opposite of the previous bloke," he told The Mirror.

"That is knee jerk and it means there's no consistency. This way, there is total consistency, and a chance for a system and philosophy to take hold. Southgate may or may not be the right man, but the system has to be given a chance.

"If we're honest, we're not going to learn much about him by keeping him on as a temporary appointment any longer. England are always going to win their qualifying games, and the friendlies don't tend to mean much."

Southgate has won two and drawn one of his three games in charge of the team.
