The Football Association have said they are "appalled" by the racist insults aimed at England players Ashley Cole and Ashley Young on social networking site Twitter.
Both men missed penalties in the Three Lions' Euro 2012 shootout defeat to Italy on Sunday and were singled out for abuse following the loss.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman earlier announced that they intend to investigate the case and find the user responsible.
An FA statement read. "We are concerned at the reports regarding allegations of abuse aimed at England players Ashley Cole and Ashley Young on Twitter.
"They have just given everything for the national team at Euro 2012 and it is appalling and unacceptable that messages of an abusive type are being posted. We support any police investigation in identifying who is behind this."
Student Liam Stacey was jailed for 56 days in March after similarly mocking Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba following his cardiac arrest.
