Roy Hodgson admitted yesterday evening that he would consider "using a psychologist" in a bid to rid England of their penalty shootout deficiencies ahead of this summer's World Cup.

After all, of the last 10 major tournaments that the Three Lions have competed in, they have exited six of them courtesy of defeats from 12 yards.

Below, Sports Mole has looked back over each of those losses.

1990 World Cup
Having stumbled to a semi-final meeting with old adversaries West Germany in Italy, Sir Bobby Robson's England were arguably the better of the two sides in Turin. However, after Gary Lineker had drawn England level at 1-1, they were unable to find a winning goal. Lineker, Peter Beardsley and David Platt scored the first three spot kicks, but that was followed by Bodo Illgner saving Stuart Pearce's effort, before Chris Waddle blasted well over the crossbar.

Euro 1996
England beat Spain in the quarter-finals on penalties as Pearce laid to rest the demons of 1990. It meant that again the hosts met Germany in the last four and once more it was Die Mannschaft who came out on top. The first 10 players scored their spot kicks, but Gareth Southgate never looked confident as his tame effort was stopped by Andreas Kopke. Next up was Andreas Moller, who beat David Seaman to seal a 6-5 success.

1998 World Cup
After an entertaining last-16 2-2 draw in Saint-Etienne, penalties were required to split England and rivals Argentina. Paul Ince and Hernan Crespo had their kicks saved early on, but when Roberto Ayala put the Argentinians 4-3 in front, David Batty needed to score to keep his nation in the competition. When asked in commentary whether or not Batty would find the net, his former Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan replied with an emphatic "yes". Moments later, the midfielder's effort was saved by Carlos Roa.

Euro 2004
England shared four goals evenly with host country Portugal in the quarter-finals and then they both scored five penalties apiece in the subsequent shootout, with David Beckham and Rui Costa failing to find the net. Next to see an effort saved was England striker Darius Vassell, and Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo then stepped up to fire the winner into the bottom corner of David James's net.

2006 World Cup
Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard went into the tournament regarded as two of England's best penalty-takers, but they both saw their attempts saved during the team's quarter-final tie with Portugal. Hugo Viana and Petit also missed for the Portuguese, but it was Jamie Carragher's strike that flew over the crossbar that would prove costly. The next penalty was taken by Cristiano Ronaldo, who sent Portugal through to the semi-finals.

Euro 2012
When Italy's Riccardo Montolivo missed from 12 yards and Wayne Rooney followed that up by scoring during the quarter-final shootout, it was advantage England, who were 2-1 in front. It fell apart from there, though, as Ashley Young struck the bar, while Gianluigi Buffon saved from Ashley Cole. Andrea Pirlo, Antonio Nocerino and Alessandro Diamanti made no mistake as the Azzurri took an unassailable 4-2 lead.
