Glen Johnson says that skipper Steven Gerrard can lead and inspire England's youngsters to World Cup victory in Brazil in 2014.

England defender Glen Johnson has no doubts that captain Steven Gerrard can inspire his country to win the 2014 World Cup.

Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson has recently awarded caps to the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Jonjo Shelvey, Steven Caulker and Jack Butland in both friendlies and qualifying matches.

Johnson believes that the youngsters can guide England to their first World Cup victory since 1966 under the leadership of the skipper.

"We've got some fantastic individuals that are doing really well at club level at the moment, so I think we're looking like we've got a very strong squad," said Johnson. "For any young kid coming through, if [Gerrard] doesn't inspire you then I don't know what will. He leads by example.

"He's been brilliant for club and country for many, many years. He's the current captain and he's flying at the moment. Not many people get to make the 100-cap landmark. For people to do it they have to be special, special players.

"You've seen it many times when Liverpool have needed a goal over the years, nine times out of 10, it's him that pops up."

England host Brazil at Wembley on Wednesday.
