Adam Lallana says that England are "confident" ahead of their Group D showdown with Uruguay on Thursday.

Southampton captain Adam Lallana has said that England have "great players" that are capable of beating Uruguay on Thursday.

Despite going down 2-1 to Italy in their World Cup opener on Saturday, the midfielder has said that England are confident of securing a victory which would give them a massive boost in terms of progressing from Group D.

"We know we need to win," he told ITV Sport. "We're confident. There were signs the other night that we are close, but the lads know it's all or nothing.

"We've got a great confidence in the camp and I'm certainly confident that we're going to get the win.

"There are always going to be big teams in the World Cup. We knew from the start that we're in a strong group, but we're a strong team and we've got a great group of players. We feel with just a few tweaks, we can get this result."

Lallana also tipped England to score a number of goals against a "top team" in the near future.

"One of these days we are going to put three of four past a top team. We just need that rub of the green and to get that extra bit of confidence and I think we will get that result," he added.

Lallana appeared as a second-half substitute in England's opening-round defeat to Italy.
