Everton manager Roberto Martinez: 'Semi-final lead means nothing'

Roberto Martinez insists that Everton's 2-1 first-leg Capital One Cup semi-final lead "means nothing" until the second leg is over.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has refused to get excited over the prospect of reaching the Capital One Cup final after watching his team beat Manchester City 2-1 in the first leg of the semi-final tonight.

Goals from Ramiro Funes Mori and Romelu Lukaku either side of Jesus Navas's equaliser put the Toffees ahead in the tie going into the second leg at the Etihad next week.

"[The lead] means nothing," Martinez told Sky Sports News. "It is the first leg we had to win and now we prepare for a very interesting second leg."

Lukaku's goal means that he now has 19 in all competitions this season and Martinez said that the Belgian wants to be the world's best striker.

"The stats are there to back any assessment of Lukaku, from our point of view he has always been the perfect striker for our football club," Martinez added. "He is a young boy, he wants to be the best in the world."

Tonight's win means that Martinez has won two of his 15 matches as a manager against City - the other being the unlikely FA Cup final win in 2013 while in charge of Wigan Athletic.
