Everton boss Roberto Martinez: 'Missed penalty damaged us against West Ham'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that Romelu Lukaku's saved penalty was the "key moment" in his side's 3-2 defeat to West Ham.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has claimed that his team were "shocked" after Romelu Lukaku missed a penalty in Saturday's late defeat to West Ham United at Goodison Park.

The Merseyside outfit went down to 10 men in the first half after Kevin Mirallas was booked twice, but they led 2-0 for 78 minutes until Michail Antonio kickstarted a comeback for the visiting team.

The Hammers scored three goals in 12 minutes to ensure that they left Merseyside with maximum points.

In the second half, Lukaku had the chance to give Everton a 3-0 lead, but his shot from the spot was saved by Adrian.

"The key moment was the penalty," BBC Sport quotes Martinez as saying. "That would have been game over and it is a feeling of missed opportunity. Everyone got a bit shocked at that moment.

"The effort, with a man down, it went to the last 10 minutes we found it difficult to do what we had been doing. The way we had to match 11 men cost us in the final 10 minutes.

"It is a shame we could not win because up until the 78th minute we were well worth winning it."

Everton remain 11th in the Premier League table.
