Billy Paynter scored the only goal of the match as Hartlepool United beat Fleetwood Town 1-0 in the Capital One Cup at Highbury Stadium this evening.
The first half was a poor contest with only Rakish Bingham coming close for Hartlepool after being played in by Paynter.
Captain Paynter then gave Pool the lead 15 minutes into the second half, heading in from a deep free kick on the right.
Harry Worley came close to equalising for Fleetwood with a header from a corner, before a goalmouth scramble saw Adam Bartlett pull off two saves to deny Amari'i Bell.
Fleetwood continued to push but they could not find the breakthrough they needed to take the match into extra time.
Hartlepool's next match will be a League Two game away at York on August 15.
