Fleetwood United draw with York City to reach League Two playoff final

A goalless draw in the second leg at Highbury is enough for Fleetwood to progress to the League Two playoff final with a 1-0 aggregate victory over York City.

Fleetwood Town held on to their first-leg advantage by drawing 0-0 with York City tonight to reach the League Two playoff final with a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Matty Blair's strike in the first leg at Bootham Crescent on Monday proved to be the only goal of the tie as Graham Alexander's side kept their promotion dreams alive.

York went close through Russell Penn's bending shot, which missed the crossbar, but Michael Coulson's stinging strike on 15 minutes was one of the few times that they tested Town stopper Chris Maxwell.

Calvin Andrew had two headed chances in the first half, while Adam Reed could not make enough contact with his own nodded effort, when breaking deep from midfield early in the second half.

Maxwell made a good save from Ryan Jarvis, who cut in from the left and shot in stoppage time, at which point York were only still in the match because of some excellent work from goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The 22-year-old stopper was at full stretch to thwart Antoni Sarcevic on 69 minutes, diving low to his left to parry away a strike which had been created by the forward's fine footwork in the area.

He also prevented Josh Morris late on when Fleetwood took advantage of York committing bodies forward to counter, but Pope stood tall to block the winger's effort on the edge of the box.

Nathan Pond, who cleared off his own line on 49 minutes when a flick-on from his teammate was inadvertently heading into the bottom corner, also headed over as United had their fair share of chances.

Fleetwood will play either Southend United or Burton Albion in the final at Wembley later this month.
