Mario Gomez has dedicated his winning goal against Portugal to Germany coach Joachim Low.
The 26-year-old headed in from Sami Khedira's cross with 12 minutes remaining to help Germany to a 1-0 win in Lviv.
Gomez said that he wanted to repay Low's faith in him after he was preferred to Miroslav Klose in attack.
"I am very happy that the coach had confidence in me and with the goal I could pay something back," said Gomez.
"It's hard to head in a ball when you're taking a step backwards but I think the ball was deflected a bit so it worked out."
The goal was Gomez's 23rd in German colours.
