Hamburger SV remain in the relegation playoff place in the Bundesliga on goal difference, despite a 1-1 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
It was an edgy start between these two sides in the bottom half of the Bundesliga, and there was not an effort on goal inside the opening 10 minutes.
Ivo Ilicevic tried to take matters into his own hands with an ambitious shot from range, but Kevin Trapp got down well to hold on to the effort.
Alexander Madlung was creating trouble from set pieces and he headed one effort wide before he was allowed space to turn and volley to put the visitors ahead around the 30-minute mark.
In the second half the visitors continued to press, but were not creating too many chances as Carlos Zambrano summed up the spell of the game with a long-range shot that went a long way wide.
Zambrano then fouled Jacques Zoua in the box, with Hakan Calhanoglu making no mistake from the spot to level matters with 20 minutes to play.
