The only goal of the game came in the 64th minute when Pierre-Michel Lasogga found the target.
Bayer Leverkusen also made it through to the next round of the German Cup as they beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 away from home, thanks to goals from Son Heung-Min and Sidney Sam.
However, fellow Bundesliga aide Mainz failed to advance into the third round, going down to a Marcel Risse goal in the 63rd minute against Koln.
There was one late evening kickoff in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday that went into extra time. Hoffenheim and Energie Cottbus failed to break the deadlock in the normal 90 minutes, but the former scored thrice without reply in the subsequent 30 minutes to book their berth in the next round of the competition.
