The Terriers had a great chance to take the lead when Danny Ward found himself through on goal and his shot beat Luke Steele, but Peter Ramage was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Barnsley responded and had a good opportunity of their own as Nick Proschwitz was played in behind the Huddersfield defence by Jack Hunt, but his effort at goal was well saved by Alex Smithies.

Mark Robins's side took the lead in the 28th minute when Nahki Wells got behind the Barnsley defence and crossed into the area for Keith Southern, who tapped the ball home from close range.

The hosts doubled their advantage minutes later with Wells again the provider. He crossed into the area again and this time Ward was on hand to convert the chance.

After the break, the Terriers got their third of the game when Wells raided forward and picked out a pass for Adam Hammill, whose shot managed to creep past Steele despite the keeper's best efforts.

It got better for Huddersfield when Wells again caused havoc in the area and was fouled by Steele, earning a penalty that Adam Clayton dispatched with ease.

The Terriers were in complete control of the game and could have made it five soon after if not for Steele, as they exchanged several passes before the ball came to Ward inside the box, but his shot was beaten away.

Huddersfield did get their fifth goal four minutes from time when Sean Scannell ran at the Barnsley defence and found the bottom corner with a low shot.
