Ipswich Town are reportedly interested in signing Napoli midfielder Jens Cajuste, whose move to Brentford has collapsed.
The 25-year-old played 26 times for the 2022-23 Serie A winners in the league last season, although only 11 of those appearances came from the start.
Cajuste possesses relative international pedigree, having represented Sweden on 23 occasions since his senior debut in November 2020.
The midfielder commenced his first-team career in Sweden at lower league outfit Orgryte before moving to Danish giants FC Midtjylland during the summer of 2018.
Since making the switch from Ligue 1 club Reims to Naples 12 months ago, Cajuste has featured 35 times for Napoli across all competitions, failing to find the net.
Ipswich 'close' to deal for Napoli's Cajuste
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli man Cajuste is edging closer to a move to the Premier League, although not the club that many were expecting earlier this month.
The report claims that top-flight newcomers Ipswich are moving towards the signing of the 25-year-old, who has cemented himself as a regular on the international scene in recent years.
It is understood that Cajuste will join on a season-long loan for the entirety of 2024-25 season, one in which the Tractor Boys will aim to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
These developments are emerging following reports earlier in August that the Swede was heading to Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium for the season.
It was believed that Thomas Frank's Bees were set to receive Cajuste on loan, with the midfielder then joining the London club permanently next summer for a fee of £10m.
Two midfielders in one week?
Ipswich are wasting no time during this summer's transfer window as they prepare for life in the Premier League for the first time in two decades.
The Tractor Boys have strengthened their attacking ranks with the additions of Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson, while Jacob Greaves and Conor Townsend have been recruited for the defence.
It now appears that Kieran McKenna's side have turned their attention to the signing of a number of engine room options, including Napoli star Cajuste.
Completing medical tests in East Anglia this week, it is also understood that Kalvin Phillips is close to securing a season-long loan from Manchester City.
