Sports Mole rounds up the action from Tuesday's EFL Cup first-round ties across the country, with Nottingham Forest beating Bury in an epic penalty shootout.

Nottingham Forest have survived an epic penalty shootout to win their EFL Cup first-round tie against Bury on Tuesday night.

The Shakers took the lead through an early Eoghan O'Connell header, but Matty Cash slotted home in the third minute of injury time to keep the Reds alive.

Neither side would give an inch in the ensuing shootout, with both goalkeepers also scoring, but O'Connell fluffed his spot kick to see Forest prevail 10-9 at the City Ground.

Nottingham's other EFL side, Notts County, also went to penalties against Championship side Middlesbrough despite taking the lead three times at the Riverside Stadium.

Tom Crawford opened the scoring for the Magpies while former Sunderland man Jon Stead netted a brace, but Enes Mahmutovic's header and Ashley Fletcher's double saw Boro draw level each time.

The hosts were successful with all of their penalties, while Stead and Dan Jones were the villains for Kevin Nolan's side as the Teessiders survived a potential giant-killing.

Bristol City, last season's semi-finalists, have seen their 2018-19 campaign collapse at the first hurdle, Yann Songo'o scoring his first goal in nearly two years for a 1-0 win to Plymouth Argyle.

The result at Ashton Gate was one of five shocks on Tuesday, alongside League Two Exeter City beating Ipswich Town on penalties and MK Dons claiming a 3-0 win over League One Charlton Athletic.

Elsewhere, Mansfield Town hammered third-tier Accrington Stanley 6-1 and League Two newboys Macclesfield Town beat League One Bradford City on penalties.

West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa are through to the second round after beating Luton Town and Yeovil Town, but fellow West Midlanders Birmingham City fell to a 2-0 loss at Reading.

Fleetwood Town, Hull City, Cheltenham Town, Millwall, and Wycombe Wanderers also needed penalties to progress to the second round, with Crewe Alexandra, Sheffield United, Colchester United, Gillingham and Northampton Town suffering heartbreak.

The other teams to go into the hat for the next round are Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Rochdale, Leeds United, Derby County, Lincoln City, Preston North End, Rotherham United, Doncaster Rovers, Burton Albion, Walsall, Bristol Rovers, Newport County, Norwich City, AFC Wimbledon, Brentford and Forest Green Rovers.
