Leeds United have been issued with a winding-up petition by shirt sponsor Enterprise Insurance over an alleged unpaid debt.
The company's managing director Andrew Flowers was part of a consortium that tried to take over the Championship club last month.
Enterprise Insurance, who are based in Gibraltar, lent Leeds £1.7m in 2012 at an interest rate of 7% for repayment next year. The case is due to be heard at the High Court in March.
The news comes following a tumultuous few days for the club.
Italian businessman Massimo Cellino agreed to buy a 75% stake in Leeds last weekend, subject to approval from the Football Association.
However, his plans have been met with stern opposition from supporters at Elland Road.
Meanwhile, manager Brian McDermott was sacked over the weekend before being dramatically reinstated on Monday.
