Nineteen years ago today, Sheffield Wednesday defeated Yorkshire rivals Leeds United 6-2 at Hillsborough.

For Sheffield Wednesday supporters of a certain vintage, January 12 1992 will probably have provided one of their lowest moments, on the pitch at least, following the club.

While Leeds United were among England's finest teams and one that would ultimately go on to be crowned Division One champions for the first time in 18 years, they humiliated the Owls on that particular evening at Hillsborough and made the short trip back with a 6-1 victory to show for their efforts.

Wednesday would go on to win just one of the next seven meetings with their Yorkshire rivals, but it was back on this day in 1995 that David Pleat's men exacted revenge for the events of almost four years earlier.

With just five minutes on the clock, the hosts broke the deadlock when Belgium international Marc Degryse converted Lee Briscoe's cross with his head.

Then, just six minutes later, Guy Whittingham doubled Wednesday's advantage, before Degryse's second goal of the contest made it 3-0 in the 25th minute.

There was then some momentary respite for visiting Leeds when their £4.5m signing from Parma, Tomas Brolin, opened his goalscoring account for the club when Steve Nicol's attempted clearance rebounded into the net of the Swede's face.

That comedic goal failed to spark a fightback from Leeds, though, as Wednesday continued their domination after the restart.

In the 67th minute Mark Bright headed in Chris Waddle's cross via the upright and then David Hirst got in on the act when he fired his shot into the bottom corner of John Lukic's net.

Substitute Rod Wallace turned in Tony Dorigo's cutback with six minutes remaining as Leeds reduced the arrears to three goals, but the final say would go to Wednesday and Hirst when he beat Lukic to Bright's knockdown to score from close range.

Speaking after the final whistle, defeated boss Howard Wilkinson said: "We played like a team who were capable of scoring six or seven goals, but unfortunately we defended like a team who would concede six too.

"I have to say that we were a bit unlucky at times. I don't think we deserved to get beaten 6-2."

Meanwhile, Wilkinson's victorious counterpart Pleat added: "We got the breaks today, but we worked very well for our goals and they were beauties. I mean, those goals go into the cabinet, where you can get them out and show them to your kids."

Wednesday: Pressman; Atherton, Nicol, Walker, Nolan; Degryse, Briscoe, Whittingham (Hyde), Waddle; Bright, Hirst

Leeds: Lukic, Kelly (Wallace), Dorigo, Palmer, Wetherall, Jobson, McAllister, Speed, Couzens, Brolin, Yeboah (Deane)
