Two sides buoyed by EFL Cup wins in midweek will prepare for battle at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, as Leicester City and Burnley do battle in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers's side eased to a 2-0 win at Millwall on Wednesday evening, while a Jay Rodriguez-inspired Burnley saw off Rochdale 4-1.


Match preview

Following struggle after struggle during his previous Premier League endeavours, Ademola Lookman will hope that his opener against Millwall is a sign of better things to come, as the RB Leipzig loanee netted before Kelechi Iheanacho's clincher at The Den in midweek.

A confidence-boosting win over Millwall is just what the doctor ordered for Leicester amid their underwhelming Premier League fortunes, as Rodgers witnessed his side go down to a surprise 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion last week - already their third loss of the new campaign.

Narrow victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City - as well as an opening Europa League draw with Napoli - have provided some early silver linings, but the 12th-placed Foxes are far from where they want to be in the embryonic rankings.

Furthermore, three of Leicester's last four home games in the Premier League have ended in defeat, and they have not shared the points domestically at the King Power since their Boxing Day draw with Manchester United - winning seven and losing six since then.

It is still early days for Leicester, of course, and Rodgers does enjoy a meeting with the Clarets on familiar territory, as the Leicester boss boasts five wins from five home games against Burnley across all competitions while in the dugout.

Having been forced to witness Burnley struggle for attacking inspiration from the bench in recent weeks, Jay Rodriguez grasped his opportunity against Rochdale with both hands and all four goals during a 4-1 romping at Turf Moor.

After Jake Beesley had given the League Two side a shock lead on Premier League turf, Rodriguez's 27-minute flurry of strikes ultimately propelled Dyche's side to a comfortable and confidence-boosting cup win amid their torrid Premier League fortunes.

Burnley could only be undone by a piece of Martin Odegaard magic against Arsenal last time out, but that 1-0 loss sees them remain on just one point from their opening five games - only basement side Norwich City have fewer - and the Clarets find themselves 19th in the rankings at this point.

It is never any surprise to see Burnley flirting with danger, but with their winless streak in the Premier League now standing at eight matches - as well as a three-game losing run away from home - Dyche's side are already being tipped for the drop come the end of the campaign.

The Clarets can also boast just one win from their last six against Leicester in the Premier League - which did come as recently as January 2020 at Turf Moor - but they have not taken all three points away from home against the Foxes since the 2007-08 Championship season.

Team News

Leicester have very few concerns on the injury front at present, with long-term absentees James Justin and Wesley Fofana the only two occupants of the King Power infirmary.

Jonny Evans was able to see out the win at The Den as part of a back three, but Jannik Vestergaard may be deemed the fitter option for the visit of Dyche's men, while Timothy Castagne and Ryan Bertrand are also set for recalls.

Ayoze Perez has returned from suspension to offer the Foxes greater depth in attack, but Patson Daka and James Maddison could be the ones to return to the first XI here.

Burnley lost Josh Brownhill to a dead leg before the win over Rochdale, but the midfielder will hope to shake off the issue in time for this game, otherwise Jack Cork could retain his spot in the middle.

Dale Stephens, Kevin Long and Connor Roberts also missed the EFL Cup clash, but the latter two are increasing their minutes in behind-closed-doors games and could return soon, while goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has entered the treatment room with a twisted ankle.

Rodriguez has surely done enough to displace Ashley Barnes in attack, while Maxwel Cornet will hope to keep Johann Berg Gudmundsson out of the side after assisting his teammate's first in midweek.

We say: Leicester City 2-1 Burnley

Burnley frustrated Arsenal throughout the 90 minutes last week - although the Gunners arguably should have scored more on the day - while a red-hot Rodriguez could provide a new dimension to the visitors' attack.

Leicester have not dazzled and delighted in the early stages of the season and could struggle to impose themselves on the game once again, but we still have confidence in the hosts' ability to grind out a narrow win.
