How Liverpool could line up against Red Bull Salzburg

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up for Tuesday's crucial Champions League showdown with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

Liverpool turn their attention to the Champions League on Tuesday night as they face Red Bull Salzburg in a crucial final group game at the Red Bull Arena.

The Merseysiders only need to avoid defeat to guarantee their place in the knockout stage of the competition they won last season, but they will likely need a victory in Austria to secure top spot in Group E.

Only a win will do for free-scoring Salzburg, meanwhile, and Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be wary of a team that gave his side a major scare in the reverse fixture at Anfield.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the holders could line up for the contest.

Out: Joel Matip (knee), Fabinho (ankle), Nathaniel Clyne (knee), Adam Lallana (cramp)
Doubtful: Dejan Lovren (muscle), Georginio Wijnaldum (cramp)

Rotation has been the name of the game so far in December for Klopp, and more changes are expected on Tuesday night as he looks to keep his squad fresh throughout a hectic December schedule.

One of those changes could be enforced, though, with Dejan Lovren limping off five minutes before half time during the weekend win at Bournemouth - an injury which is not serious enough to keep him out of the squad but could see him rested as a precaution.

Joe Gomez is therefore expected to move into centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Trent Alexander-Arnold coming into the side after being left out of the lineup at Dean Court.

Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum both missed Saturday's match with bouts of cramp, but the latter has travelled with the squad and could go straight back into the starting XI at the expense of former Salzburg player Naby Keita.

Sadio Mane also used to play for Tuesday's opponents, scoring 31 goals in 63 league games between 2012 and 2014, and he will hope to come back into the side after being rested at the weekend.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah suffered the same fate for the Merseyside derby, but the importance of this match, and the likely need for more than one goal given Salzburg's significant attacking prowess, could mean that the front three are reunited.

Liverpool's fringe players have stepped up to the plate when called upon recently, though, with Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi all getting on the scoresheet in the last two games alone.
