Pepe Reina says that he is "proud" of Liverpool's display following their Europa League defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has claimed that he feels "proud" of his teammates following their Europa League exit last night.

The Reds needed three goals against Zenit St Petersburg to clinch a place in the final 16, but that feat was extended to four when Hulk found the back of the net in the first half.

Despite launching a fightback courtesy of a brace from Luis Suarez and a goal from Joe Allen, the Merseyside outfit were unable to overcome the deficit and were knocked out of the competition 3-3 on aggregate, with Zenit taking the away goal advantage.

"[The fans have] been brilliant, as they always are," Reina told the club's official website. "They were with us even more when we conceded the goal. That's something to be very happy about and I feel very proud.

"We're disappointed because we didn't get through but we have to be proud of what we did. We went out with our heads held high. All we could do was try our best and that's exactly what we did. We're not happy because we went out but that's football."

Meanwhile, Premier League outfits Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all progressed into the next round of the competition.
