Carlisle United have gone into half time on level terms with Liverpool after Derek Asamoah cancelled out Danny Ings's opener.
Liverpool began the tie quickly as Roberto Firmino had two efforts on goal, both going marginally wide.
Ings was the first player to hit a strike on target for Brendan Rodgers's side but Mark Gillespie was equal to the effort.
It was Ings who opened the scoring for the Reds, tapping in from two yards out after being teed up by Adam Lallana.
Carlisle's first foray into the Liverpool box late in the half paid dividends as Bastien Hery found Derek Asamoah at the back post, who scored past Adam Bogdan from close range.
Rodgers responded to the goal by introducing Divock Origi for Roberto Firmino but his team were unable to find another goal before the half-time whistle.
