Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he was interviewed for the Liverpool job in 2015 ahead of the position ultimately being given to Jurgen Klopp.
The Italian has enjoyed a strong start to life at Goodison Park, claiming impressive victories over Burnley and Newcastle United along with producing a gallant display at Manchester City.
In his fourth game as Everton boss, Ancelotti travels to Anfield to meet Liverpool in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to The Telegraph, the Champions League winner said: "It was after [I left] Real Madrid, I had a chat with the owner.
"They were looking for a new manager but I think they made a right choice with Jurgen. He is doing fantastic work at Liverpool, so well done."
Liverpool went for Klopp due to the manager's superior understanding of the squad along with his conviction that he was always destined to manage the Merseyside club.
Victory for Ancelotti and Everton at Anfield on Sunday would serve as the club's first away victory over their rivals since September 1999.
