Steven Gerrard has told fans to "take no notice" of Dave Whelan following claims that the Wigan Athletic chairman made about Liverpool's search for a new manager.
Former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers was confirmed as the successor to Kenny Dalglish at Anfield on Friday.
However, Whelan has claimed that Latics coach Roberto Martinez was Liverpool's first choice for the position.
"I've been kept in the loop all along by the board and the owners and he was always first choice - so take no notice of Dave Whelan," said Gerrard.
"I can go on record and guarantee he was first choice."
Rodgers took Swansea to the Premier League two seasons ago before guiding the Welsh club to an 11th-placed finish.
