PGMOL "strongly refute" Jurgen Klopp allegations against Paul Tierney

The PGMOL "strongly refute" claims made by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp against referee Paul Tierney in the Reds' 4-3 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The PGMOL have announced that they "strongly refute" claims made against referee Paul Tierney by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in Sunday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3 at Anfield to rise into fifth place in the Premier League table, despite throwing away a 3-0 lead as Spurs miraculously levelled the scores at 3-3 in injury time.

Richarlison scored the sixth and penultimate goal of the contest in front of the away end, although Klopp was infuriated at the decision to award Tottenham the free kick that led to the Brazilian's goal.

Only a couple of minutes later, Diogo Jota capitalised on a Lucas Moura mistake to restore Liverpool's one-goal lead, and Klopp ran to celebrate in the face of VAR official John Brooks.

The 55-year-old - who appeared to pull his hamstring in the process - was unsurprisingly booked by on-field referee Tierney for the manner of his celebrations, but his post-game comments raised a few eyebrows.

Klopp alleged that Tierney used words that were "not OK" when cautioning him and also claimed that the official must have something "against" his side, although he could not specify what exactly.

Following the German's bombshell claims, the PGMOL announced that they had reviewed the audio of Tierney's interaction with Klopp and saw no truth in the latter's suggestions.

"PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side's fixture with Tottenham Hotspur," the statement read.

"Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today's fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout, including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager so, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney's actions were improper."

Tierney was at the centre of two highly controversial decisions on the day, firstly electing not to punish Oliver Skipp for a crunching tackle on Luis Diaz, who was making his first Liverpool start since recovering from knee surgery.

Skipp was involved in another incident late on when he was kicked in the head by Jota, who raised his boot and drew blood from the Tottenham midfielder with his studs.

However, Tierney and VAR official David Coote saw no reason to take any further action against Jota, whose last-gasp strike rubbed salt into the wounds for an incensed Ryan Mason.

Tottenham's interim manager claimed that the Portuguese attacker should have been sent off and demanded an explanation from the officiating team as to why he was still on the pitch for his dramatic late winner.

Victory over Tottenham marked a fourth Premier League win on the bounce for Liverpool, who remain seven points adrift of the Champions League places having played a game more than Manchester United.

The Reds make a swift return to Anfield this week, as Fulham pay a visit for Wednesday's Premier League encounter. body check tags ::
