Jurgen Klopp reign ends with victory over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool reign ends with a routine 2-0 Premier League win over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

Departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp signed off at Anfield in style as the Reds earned a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Premier League finale.

After taking in the endless pre-match tributes, the 56-year-old witnessed his players pummel Gary O'Neil's backline with a succession of shots, two of which went in from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah.

The visitors to Anfield were holding out well until a nonsensical challenge from Nelson Semedo saw him take an early walk of shame, but Klopp's walk onto the pitch at full time was one of unbridled pride.

Nothing that occurred on Merseyside could have impacted the Reds' third-placed ranking in the Premier League table, but the on-field action paled into insignificance as Klopp enjoyed his deserved fairytale ending.

The hand was on Klopp's chest as the Anfield crowd serenaded the German with one final rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, after which he witnessed his Reds crop dominate proceedings from the get-go.

Attacks down the left were proving particularly fruitful for the hosts, but Wolves put bodies in the way to good effect when shots came in and were not without their chances on the counter too.

However, referee Chris Kavanagh was sent to the screen in the 26th minute to review a crunching Nelson Semedo tackle on Alexis Mac Allister - who felt the full force of the Portuguese's studs on his lower leg - and his yellow card was upgraded to a red.

Liverpool break 80-point barrier in Klopp swansong

Mac Allister would eventually shake off the effects of that horrendous challenge, though, and the Argentine would appropriately break the deadlock in the 35th minute, meeting Harvey Elliott's cross from the right with a fine header into the bottom corner.

Semedo's needless sending-off would act as the trigger for Wolves' downfall as Liverpool doubled their lead just six moments later; a Reds corner found its way to Mohamed Salah at the back stick, and even though the Egyptian's strike was a weak one, Quansah arrived in a packed six-yard box to turn home.

Picking up where they left off in Klopp's farewell 45 minutes, Liverpool had the ball in the back of the Wolves net just 31 seconds into the second 45, but Luis Diaz had just carried the ball out of play before cutting back for Mac Allister to stroke home.

However, a miss from the former in the 50th was far more excruciating, as Cody Gakpo skipped past Jose Sa and managed to flick a cross to the back post for the arriving Diaz, whose half-volley struck the bar and bounced on the line before the visiting goalkeeper gathered.

Chances continued to come thick and fast for Klopp's side, as Mac Allister inexplicably sent a six-yard strike over the top in the 59th with the goal at his mercy, and it took a full-length save from Sa to keep Salah's curler out 10 minutes later.

A couple of threats to Liverpool's advantage came and went in the final five minutes, as Alisson Becker firstly got down low to keep out a Pedro Neto free kick, before Matt Doherty was denied a consolation header by a marginal offside.

Liverpool ultimately declared at two before the farewell guards of honour began - soon-to-be free agents Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip also enjoyed their moments in the spotlight - as Klopp and his team basked in the Merseyside sunshine one last time. body check tags ::
