Liverpool defeat Manchester City 3-1 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the International Champions Cup.

Liverpool have put themselves in good stead to reach the final of the International Champions Cup after defeating Manchester City on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

The Premier League champions edged a close first half but failed to break the deadlock before the interval, although Edin Dzeko did have a strike ruled out for offside.

Stevan Jovetic was a live wire throughout the game, and his efforts paid off in the 53rd minute when Jesus Navas's cross fell invitingly in the area, and he made no mistake from close range.

Liverpool were behind for a matter of minutes, netting an equaliser just before the hour mark through Jordan Henderson, who curled one into the top corner after collecting a loose ball.

Bruno Zuculini headed against the bar at the other end, but it wasn't long until City edged their noses in front once again thanks to Jovetic's second of the day in the 76th minute.

City continued to dominate, but it was Liverpool's Raheem Sterling who had the final word, picking up a pass from Lucas and smashing home from close range to send the match to a shootout.

Liverpool triumphed 3-1 on penalties after Aleksandar Kolarov, Yaya Toure, and Navas missed from the spot, allowing Lucas to coolly slot home the decider.
