Luton Town are reportedly prepared to hand Andros Townsend another chance at top-flight football, with the winger currently on trial at the Kenilworth Road club.

The 32-year-old is a free agent at the moment after leaving Everton in the summer at the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to a two-year spell on Merseyside.

Townsend suffered a serious ACL injury in March 2022 and did not feature for the Toffees again in any competition, meaning that he did not kick a ball during the entirety of the 2022-23 term.

The former England international left Sean Dyche's side having netted seven times in 27 appearances, however injury issues led to the player being free to leave and find a new club.

According to The Express, Townsend is close to winning a contract at Luton following a trial period with the Premier League newcomers during the opening days of October.

The report claims that the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man could be handed the opportunity to impress in top-flight football once again despite a terrible injury record over the past 18 months.

Townsend has been training with the Hatters' first team ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Kenilworth Road on Saturday afternoon, although he will not feature against Ange Postecoglou's Lilywhites.

The 13-time international started for Luton's Under-21s side on Friday evening, travelling up North with the club's development side to face Leeds United in the Premier League Cup.

Hatters boss Rob Edwards was asked about the possibility of signing Townsend during his pre-Spurs press conference, and the Welshman gave a measured response on whether the 32-year-old would be joining permanently.

"There is room in the squad, we've only got 24, so there's room for one more if we wanted to bring someone else in," Edwards explained to the gathered journalists on Friday afternoon.

"Andros (Townsend) is available at the moment, he's come in and been training with us for a week and he's playing in a game tonight for the youngsters up at Leeds. We've been able to get a good look at him and also I've got to stress, for him, he needs to be able to have a look at us as well.

"He's had a fantastic playing career, he's still really, really keen, hungry to play, but it's got to be right for him as well, for both parties. I've seen real signs of quality and what we've got to make sure is that if we're going to add to the group, they can help us and make us better."

Townsend was on trial during the summer at fellow newly-promoted side Burnley in a bid to secure a contract at Turf Moor, however Clarets boss Vincent Kompany decided against offering the winger a deal - a decision which brought the player to tears.

Luton will be looking to secure their second win of the top-flight campaign when they welcome an unbeaten Spurs side to Kenilworth Road on Saturday afternoon. body check tags ::
