Sports Mole analyses the Champions League match between Malmo and Olympiacos at the Swedbank Stadion.

Malmo claimed a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos to pick up their first points in this season's Champions League.

They took the lead just before the break when Markus Rosenberg tapped in following a mistake from the visitors' defence.

With eight minutes left to play the Malmo captain doubled his side's lead with a strike into the top corner that sealed the win.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the events that unfolded at the Swedbank Stadion.

Was the result fair?

The first half was a very even affair and it was Olympiacos who had looked the more likely to score, but that all changed when Rosenberg found the net just before the break. That goal gave Malmo a platform to build upon and something to hang on to in the second half. In the end it was a deserved victory and a huge three points for the Swedish champions.

Malmo's performance

Malmo may not have seen much of the ball this evening, but they made their chances count. Their defence was solid throughout and they weathered the storm early on to take the lead. Once they went ahead they looked the better team and had the best chances in the second half. Many will have expected them to finish bottom of Group A, but they have shown that they are not just here to make up the numbers.

Olympiacos's performance

Despite a good start to the match and a huge amount of possession, Olympiacos were undone by poor defensive mistakes. Roberto and Alberto Botia were at fault for a mix-up at the end of the first half which allowed Rosenberg in to score. The home team's second goal of the match was also down to some sloppy defending and if they continue to make such glaring errors then their run in this year's tournament will come to an early end.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Markus Rosenberg: The Malmo captain led by example and scored both goals for his team in tonight's historic victory. He showed his experience with a confident forward display and was at the heart of everything good.

Biggest gaffe

Malmo's first goal of the evening was courtesy of a howler from the Olympiacos defence, as Botia and goalkeeper Roberto made a complete mess of a long ball forward. Their inability to clear the danger allowed Rosenberg in to score and their team never recovered from that setback.

Referee's performance

It wasn't the most eventful of nights for match official Sergey Karasev. The Russian handed out four yellow cards, each of which were deserved bookings. He did not have to make any controversial calls and allowed the game to flow.

What next?

Malmo: Malmo return to league action with a trip to AIK on Sunday.

Olympiacos: The Greek champions face Ergotelis in their next match on October 18.
