Relive Sports Mole's live text commentary of the Champions League Group C match between Borussia Monchengladbach and Manchester City.

Manchester City have secured a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola's side had a helping hand from Barcelona as the Catalan giants defeated Group C opponents Celtic in Glasgow this evening.

In Borussia-Park, Raffael put the hosts ahead in the 23rd minute, and David Silva equalised on the stroke of half-time, but both teams had a player sent off in the second half.

Gladbach captain Lars Stindl was given his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card, while Fernandinho suffered the same fate.

Discover how the game unfolded in Sports Mole's updates below.

Welcome back for another night of European action! In the Champions League this evening, a number of big clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, will take to the pitch. With regards to the British contingent, we have Arsenal, Celtic and Manchester City all in action. Right here, we will be taking you through the game between City and Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park.
If City secure a win in Germany, they will grab a place in the last 16 of the tournament, joining fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Leicester City. Tottenham Hotspur, who are the only other English representative in the group stages, missed out on a spot in the knockout rounds after losing 2-1 to Monaco last night.
Gladbach still have a chance of qualifying for the last 16, though, if they manage to cause an upset against City and take maximum points. If they do, they will equal their opponent's seven points with one game left to play. The problem is that their final group game is against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Anything can happen on the day of course, but I don't think many would back Gladbach to get something over there.
Right, before we go any further, let's bring you the lineups...
MAN CITY XI: Bravo; Kolarov, Stones, Otamendi; Fernandinho, Gundogan; De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Navas; Aguero
Subs: Caballero, Sagna, Clichy, Nolito, Iheanacho, Fernando, Sane
BORUSSIA M'GLADBACH XI: Sommer; Jantschke, Elvedi, Christensen, Wendt; Strobl, Dahoud; Traore, Stindl, Johnson; Raffael
Guardiola has made four changes to the side that defeated Crystal Palace. John Stones comes in to replace the injured Vincent Kompany, while Bacary Sagna drops to the bench. Ilkay Gundogan comes in for Yaya Toure, who is not in City's Champions League squad. David Silva and Jesus Navas join the attack behind Sergio Aguero, while Nolito has to settle for a spot on the bench.
As for Gladbach, they are without suspended duo Christoph Kramer and Julian Korb, while Alvaro Dominguez, Patrick Hermann and Mamadou Doucoure are out injured. With regards to attack, Raffael will lead the line for the German outfit.
As mentioned, there is no Vincent Kompany for City this evening as the defender is suffering with yet another injury. It's been a torrid season for the Belgium international as he has started just two Premier League matches this season due to calf, groin and thigh problems. The latest issue came at the weekend when he was taken off during City's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace with concussion.
Guardiola later revealed that the centre-back had also suffered knee ligament damage, which is expected to keep him on the treatment table for weeks rather than days. It's a cruel blow to a player who has started just 15 matches in all competitions in 2016. In fact, he only managed to make 22 appearances in the 2015-16 campaign - his fewest total in a season since joining City in 2008.
Guardiola confirmed Kompany's knee problem in a press conference by telling reporters: "He has a problem with his knee. He could be out for weeks. He's sad and I'm sad. It's a long time he doesn't play.

"He is in the best hands so he can recover as soon as possible. He will make the best treatment possible. The doctor told me a few weeks [that Kompany will be out]. We'll see. It is ligaments."

So, there's misery on the injury front for Kompany, but is there more optimism for the club where their Champions League run is concerned? In short, yes. However, it could have been a different story had they lost to Barcelona, who currently have a two-point lead at the top of Group C. Heading into the game at the Etihad Stadium on November 1, City were thumped 4-0 by the Catalan giants at the Camp Nou.
It was Guardiola's first return to the stadium since being appointed City boss, and it was a very unhappy visit. Barca ran riot on the goal front, with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick and Neymar rubbing salt into the wound with a fourth in the 89th minute. Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the result was that Barcelona were not even at their best yet they still managed to win by that margin.
It was a difficult spell for City as prior to that match they had lost won and drawn one in the Premier League, and they were also held to a 3-3 draw by Celtic in their Group C clash in Glasgow two months ago. It was a frantic game, with City coming from behind three times to scrape a point. Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling and Nolito were the scorers on the night.
City's fortunes began to change at the start of November when they welcomed Barcelona to the Etihad Stadium. Many thought that Guardiola's side would suffer another defeat at the hands of the Spanish giants, particularly after Messi scored 21 minutes into the game. However, City turned it around thanks to a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and a goal from Kevin De Bruyne. It was a magical night for the North-West outfit, and they head into tonight's clash as strong favourites.

The performance has since boosted City's chances of winning the Champions League, but Guardiola is playing down the club's threat in the competition.

Earlier this week he told reporters: "Maybe in 10 years people will talk about City as one of the candidates to win it. We are talking about the Spanish teams - Barcelona, Real, Atletico, plus Bayern, Juventus.

"They have had a long time in Europe and that counts for a lot in terms of respect from  opponents, respect from FIFA and respect from UEFA. We just need time to achieve that level."

STATS! The momentum may be with City, but they have not won any of their last four Champions League games on the road having drawn two and lost two. The team have also not kept a clean sheet since December 2014 when they beat Roma 2-0, which means that they have conceded in each of their last nine away games in the competition.
Let's not forget, reaching the last 16 is no small feat for City as they have only managed to do it once, which was last season when they went on to lose to Real Madrid in the semi-finals. With Guardiola at the helm, it has been widely thought that the club reaching the knockout rounds would be a given, but the team are not hugely experienced when it comes to this level. Having said that, they are expected to get the job done today.
In terms of form overall, they head into tonight's match on a five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, but only two of those results have ended in wins - against West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace. They recorded 1-1 draws with Everton, Southampton and Middlesbrough. In fact, they have only kept two clean sheets in the top flight after 12 games.
So, what can we say about City's opponents tonight? Well, Gladbach are playing in their third match in seven days, so facing a team of City's calibre is not hugely ideal for the German outfit. They're not having the greatest of times in the league given that they sit 13th in the Bundesliga having lost three and drawn two in their last five outings.
With regards to their Champions League campaign, it did not get off to the best start as they lost 4-0 to City at the Etihad Stadium. Next up was Barcelona, and after Thorgan Hazard opened the scoring in the 34th minute, hopes were raised for Gladbach, but they conceded twice in the second half to Arda Turan and Gerard Pique to record a 2-1 loss on home turf.
The only win of their Group C campaign so far is a 2-0 triumph over Celtic in Glasgow, which included goals from Lars Stindl and Andre Hahn. At the start of the month, they welcomed Celtic to Germany and just missed out on a victory after Stindl's first-half goal was cancelled out by Moussa Dembele's 76th-minute penalty.
Manager Andre Schubert is taking a realistic approach to tonight's game, suggesting that the club will focus on securing third place, which will result in Europa League qualification.

"We're not going to try and pull something extraordinary out of the hat," Schubert told reporters. "It's about looking to contain Man City as best we can. We're focusing on our strengths and how we can seize our opportunity.

"We are playing against one of the best teams, with the potential to get to the semi-finals or the final of the Champions League. We're huge underdogs going into this game, we're aware of that."

DID YOU KNOW? Gladbach have never reached the last-16 stage before as they are competing in just their second consecutive spell in the group phase. They have only managed to win one of their five home games in the tournament, which was against Sevilla in November 2015. Also, in all of those games, both teams scored.
HEAD TO HEAD: The two sides met in September and it was a very comfortable win for City as they cruised to a 4-0 triumph. Aguero nabbed a hat-trick, while Ikechi Iheanacho wrapped up the result with a 91st-minute goal. These two clubs have played one another in the group phase for two seasons in a row, with City winning all three games. With regards to German opposition, though, the Premier League club have not kept a clean sheet in five away fixtures.
Both teams have made their way out onto the pitch and the Champions League theme tune blasts from the speakers. As usual, there's a chorus of boos from the City fans. Here come the obligatory handshakes. In a few moments the game will be underway!
KICKOFF! City get us underway at Borussia-Park! Remember, Guardiola's side will secure their place in the last 16 if they win this evening.
As we thought, City have set up with three at the back, but Fernandinho is able to drop into defence if he is required. Guardiola has only used this system a handful of times, so we'll see if it works tonight.
Schubert said prior to the match that his team will try to contain City, and we've seen signs of that already. The whole team are behind the ball, allowing their opponents to pass the ball freely among themselves.
Navas gets released down the right-hand side and he drills a low cross into the box, but it gets cut out by Jantschke and out for a corner. The resulting set piece is whipped into the penalty area to find Fernandinho, who has a free header, but he fails to pose a threat as the ball goes over the crossbar.
Some threat from the hosts as Dahoud slips the ball into the box, but City are able to scramble it away for the most part. Gladbach come again as the ball drops to Stindl, whose shot is weak and Bravo comfortably gathers.
Gladbach counter and Raffael sends a lovely through-ball to Johnson, but his strike towards the bottom left corner is comfortably stopped by Bravo.
Silva wins a corner for City and the Spaniard decides to take the set piece. He whips the ball in but Sommer tracks it well and gets there first with a punch.
Gladbach are having a decent spell of pressure here. Otamendi manages to nick the ball off Raffael, but the City defender fails to hold onto it. Traore then crosses high into the box, but it flies over everyone's head and City take back possession.
Navas charges down the right before delivering in a cross looking for Aguero in the centre of the penalty area, but the ball drops just behind him and the ball is hooked away by Gladbach.
The ball is hoofed long from City's defence, searching for Navas's run, but the keeper comes off his line to pluck the ball from the air before the Spaniard can reach it.
Sterling tries to play in De Bruyne on the left-hand side, but Christensen tracks back and is able to stop the ball from reaching its intended target.
De Bruyne and Silva exchange passes before the latter whips the ball across the face of goal for Aguero, but the striker slips and fails to get on the end of it.
BOOKING! Stindl showing his frustration as he gets cautioned for bringing down De Bruyne from behind. A needless foul.
GOAL! GLADBACH 1-0 MAN CITY (RAFFAEL)
Gladbach stun City! They have rarely seen the ball, but they have taken the lead at Borussia-Park through Raffael. The moves begins with Stindl, who charges down the left before cutting the ball back to Raffael in the centre of the box. The forward takes a touch and then hammers the ball past Bravo.
Traore floats the ball into Johnson, but Stones gets there first and tries to clear. He doesn't get the ball very far, though, and Sterling attempts to dribble away with the ball. Gladbach win in back and the ball is lifted into the box, leaving Navas to header out of a corner.
Traore takes the corner, but Silva initially clears. Gladbach work the ball around the edge of the area before Strobl shoots from the corner of the box. It whacks Kolarov on the arm, but he couldn't do much about it and the referee rightly waves away the penalty claims.
City haven't really got into this game, despite in the early stages dominating possession. They need to find a way to get Aguero involved because at the moment, he's isolated up there.
Gladbach go on the charge again as Stindl, who has been all over the pitch tonight, plays it out wide to Traore, who attempts a left-footed shot in the box, but it's blocked by Kolarov.
Frustration for Aguero as a decent counter-attacking opportunity breaks down when he's penalised for seemingly trying to pull back Christensen, who falls to the ground. Replays show that the City striker was actually pulled in the first place. No wonder he's not happy!
Fernandinho lifts the ball to Sterling on the edge of the area. The England international drills it into the centre of the box but it's cleared.
SAVE! The resulting corner is played out to Gundogan, who takes a touch on the edge of the box before thumping a low drive towards the bottom left corner, but Sommer makes a great stop with his fingertips.
SAVE! Oh dear, poor initially from Bravo as his throw goes directly to Wendt, who skips past three players, including Fernandinho, before unleashing a shot from inside the box but Bravo comes off his line, makes his body big and stops the attempt.
GLADBACH SUB: The hosts are forced into their first change of the game as Traore goes down the tunnel with a leg injury. Hofmann comes on to replace him.
CHANCE! Stindl picks the ball up wide in the final third before cutting it back to Dahoud, who is waiting on the edge of the area. The rumoured Liverpool target tries to bend it into the top corner, but his effort goes over the crossbar.
BOOKING! Fernandinho goes in the book after bringing down Dahoud, who charged past a handful of City players in a marauding run through midfield.
CHANCE! City's best opportunity of the game! De Bruyne plays the ball over the top for Sterling, who is just offside but the flag stays down. The ex-Liverpool winger cuts it back to Aguero in the centre of the box and the Argentine swings his foot but his effort is saved.
GOAL! GLADBACH 1-1 MAN CITY (SILVA)
What a crucial goal for City! De Bruyne does well as he's played through in the box. The Belgian moves towards the byline before fizzing it across goal, where Silva is there to nudge it home.
HALF-TIME: GLADBACH 1-1 MAN CITY
Manchester City pull a goal back one minute into injury time to end the first half 1-1 against Gladbach at Borussia-Park. It's been far from a vintage performance from Pep Guardiola's side as they struggled to get going and the three-man defence failed to cope with their opponent's attacking threat. Gladbach set up with 11 men behind the ball, but they posed plenty of danger on the counter-attack as they went a goal up in the 23rd minute thanks to Raffael. After switching formation, City began to cause more trouble and David Silva managed to net just before the stroke of half-time. We'll return for the second half shortly!
RESTART! Gladbach get the second half underway! Will there be a winner tonight? Let's find out!
De Bruyne plays the ball out to Gundogan on the left. The midfielder delivers a deep cross into the box, but it's poor and too long for his teammates to reach.
Much like the first half, City are seeing plenty of the ball, but they're not quite probing for that second goal.
BOOKING! Young Dahoud goes into the referee's book for clawing back Navas.
CHANCE! Decent opportunity for City as De Bruyne swings the resulting free kick into the box and finds Stones, who tries to header it across goal, but it bounces in front of Sommer, who handles and then gets fouled by Fernandinho.
RED CARD! Oh dear, Gladbach's captain Stindl has been sent off for bashing into Otamendi. It's a strange decision from the skipper and as a result he gets a second yellow and given his marching orders by the referee.
Prior to that incident, City had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled offside! De Bruyne had the ball in the box, but under pressure from the defence he played the ball across to Sterling, who poked it into the net, but he was offside when doing so.
The home fans scream for a handball after Otamendi cuts out Raffael's pass to Johnson, but the referee is having none of it.
It's all City now as you'd expect with Gladbach down to 10 men. At the moment, though, the hosts are doing well enough to keep their opponents out. Let's just see if they can do that for half an hour or so!
GLADBACH SUB: It's the end of Dahoud's night as defender Vestergaard comes onto the field. The home fans don't seem too pleased with that decision!
RED CARD! Oh dear, now City are down to 10 men! Fernandinho gets shown a second yellow card for appearing to pull on his opponent. Looks harsh to me!
CHANCE! Gladbach are feeling the boost of Fernandinho's dismissal as they venture forward with Raffael, who shoots from the edge of the box, but it just drifts inches wide of the post.
SAVE! A thumping effort from De Bruyne from the top of the box is stopped by Sommer, who sends the ball off course with one hand.
MAN CITY SUB: Guardiola brings on a defender as Sagna replaces Sterling.
BOOKINGS! Two Gladbach players receive yellow cards in the space of as many minutes. Jantshke is penalised for a strong tackle on Sagna, while Raffael's heavy lunge earned him a caution.
City get a free kick in a dangerous area, and it's left by De Bruyne for Kolarov, who hits it into the box, but it's eventually cleared by Gladbach.
Silva aims for Aguero with a cross, but the striker loses his footing slightly and the ball ends up running away from him.
Sagna aims the ball forward, but it's a poor pass from the defender as it completely misses both Gundogan and Silva, both of whom were in space.
SAVE! Another good stop from Sommer, who prevents Navas's deep cross from sneaking past him. The goalkeeper was alert as the move came from a short corner.
The hosts have a rare spell of possession as Vestegaard tries to slip in Wendt, but Sagna tracks the pass and drops back to clear.
GLADBACH SUB: Raffael leaves the pitch with a round of applause from the fans. Hahn takes his place.
City are just knocking the ball around the back as they wind the clock down. It will be job done after two minutes of added time are played.
FULL-TIME: GLADBACH 1-1 MAN CITY
Job done for Manchester City as they reach the knockout stages for just the second time in their history. It wasn't the most enjoyable of games to watch, but the 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach is enough to send them into the last 16. That is because Barcelona defeated Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow. Raffael put Gladbach ahead in the 23rd minute, but David Silva pulled one back on the stroke of half-time. Both teams had a player sent off, with Lars Stindl and Fernandinho given their marching orders. Right, that's all from us! Thank you for sticking around and until next time, goodbye!
