Keith Curle
Record transfers are commonplace for Manchester City nowadays, but that was not the case in 1991 when Keith Curle joined for £2.5m - at the time the club's most expensive ever player.
The fee also made Curle the joint-most expensive defender in British football, and his form soon earned him a call-up to the England squad in addition to being appointed City's captain.
The three-time England international spent five years at Maine Road, including the first four seasons of the Premier League.
Curle eventually left the club following their relegation in 1996 having made 174 league appearances, scoring 11 goals.
