Kevin De Bruyne: 'I must live up to my price'

Manchester City record signing Kevin De Bruyne admits that it is up to him to pay back the club and ensure that he is a success in the Premier League.

Manchester City record signing Kevin De Bruyne has admitted that he will have to live up to his price tag and wages at the club or risk finding himself out of the picture at the Etihad.

The Belgium international joined Manuel Pellegrini's side for £54m on a six-year deal reportedly worth £200,000 per week after being named German Footballer of the Year last season.

However, the 24-year-old, who failed to break through at Chelsea before moving to Germany, says that he will have to shine at City if he is to pay back the club and hold down a starting place.

"Of course I earn a lot at City, but I am not the only footballer in that situation," he told The Mirror. "Obviously, there is now much talk about money, but money is secondary for me.

"The sweetest thing I do is stand on that field, but it is also up to me to keep performing. If I do not [perform] at City, I will have to leave or to earn less.

"It is good for me to be with the national team after my transfer. Here I can work in a quiet environment. In England the spotlight will be - logically – on me immediately, from the first moment."

De Bruyne scored in Belgium's 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Bosnia on Thursday night.
