Paul Robinson has described criticism of Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart as "a joke".
The England number one's performance during City's 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday has led for calls for Celtic's Fraser Forster to replace Hart in the national side.
The Blackburn Rovers and former England keeper told TalkSport: "It's a joke we're even talking about it. It's the old thing with English goalkeepers. You want to be careful what you wish for.
"If you look at [Forster and Norwich's John Ruddy], yeah they're very good goalkeepers, but they've only got one cap between them. It's someone else you're going to build up and then if they make a mistake they'll get the same treatment."
"It's strange because everybody in the country wants the national team to do well but we seem to take great pride in highlighting the faults of players and where they could fall down. We all need to get behind them."
England have World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Montenegro later this month.
