Wolverhampton Wanderers win the Premier League Asia Trophy by seeing off Manchester City on penalties, with Saturday's final in Shanghai having ended goalless.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have won the Premier League Asia Trophy courtesy of a penalty-shootout victory over Manchester City in Shanghai.

After Saturday's final had ended goalless, Rui Patricio saved from Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Lukas Nmecha as Wolves prevailed by a 3-2 scoreline.

Conor Coady and Max Kilman both missed for Wolves, although goals from Ryan Bennett, Taylor Perry and Ruben Vinagre proved enough to guide Wolves to glory on their first appearance in the tournament.

City went straight onto the front foot at the Hongkou Stadium as Raheem Sterling forced an early save out of Patricio, while Kevin De Bruyne's inswinging cross almost found the far corner.

Summer signing Rodri was the next City player to go close, with Patricio reacting sharply to prevent the Spaniard's six-yard effort from finding the back of the net.

However, it appeared that City's pressure had paid off midway through the first half after Adama Traore tripped Leroy Sane as the German made his way into the penalty area.

Sterling took responsibility for the spot kick, only for the winger to fire the ball at least a yard over the crossbar when attempting to find the top left corner.

Wolves improved as the half progressed, although it was City who continued to look the most likely to open the scoring with Sane dragging a left-footed effort wide after being teed up by Sterling.

Pep Guardiola made four alterations ahead of the restart, and it provided City with a boost as Nuno Espirito Santo opted to keep with his team from the first half.

As Wolves appeared to be suffering the effects of the semi-final three days ago, City maintained their high intensity, without necessarily forcing Patricio into any significant saves.

Wolves were largely playing on the break, although their only shot of any note before the final quarter came when Ruben Neves fired straight at Claudio Bravo from 30 yards out.

City were still having the better of open play as the game progressed into the closing stages, although the closest that they came to a winner was from a Silva set piece which was brilliantly kept out by Patricio.

The goalkeepers were always likely to come out on top in the shootout as a result of the amount of inexperienced outfield players who ended the game, and it was Patricio who starred to hand Wolves a boost ahead of the Europa League second qualifying round next week.
