Manchester City have reportedly failed in their attempts to strike a deal with Groningen for midfielder Ritsu Doan.
City have been left impressed with Doan's performances in the Eredivisie this season, with eight goals and three assists coming from 27 appearances.
The Dutch club have pushed through a permanent deal for the Japanese player - who has joined from Gamba Osaka - but City allegedly regarded Doan as a future player for the Premier League side.
However, Groningen's technical director Ron Jans has suggested that the club were keen to stay in control of the 19-year-old's future.
Jans told De Telegraaf: "Now we have everything in our own hands. We said that we really liked it that they offered it, but we're doing it on our own. The connection with City is very positive."
Doan has represented Japan at Under-16, Under-19 and Under-20 levels.
