Goalkeeper Andre Onana has insisted that Manchester United only lost to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night because of his mistake for the first goal.
On the back of three defeats in five matches in the Premier League, United were hoping for a response on their return to the Champions League.
Head coach Erik ten Hag would have been relatively satisfied with how his team started the match at the Allianz Arena before Bayern went in front.
A tame effort from Leroy Sane should have been comfortably dealt with by Onana, only for the Cameroon international to allow the ball to squirm from his grasp and roll into the bottom corner.
Bayern quickly scored a second and were leading 3-1 heading into the 88th minute before a flurry of goals lead to the Bundesliga champions eventually prevailing by a 4-3 scoreline.
After the game, there was further scrutiny on United, who had conceded four goals in a single Champions League fixture for just the second time, but Onana took the decision to front up to the media.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the summer arrival accepted responsibility for the defeat, claiming that he 'took away United's momentum' by conceding Bayern's opener.
The 27-year-old said: "It's difficult to lose this way as we started very good but after my mistake we lost control of the game.
"It's a difficult situation for us, and me, as I let the team down. The team was really good but it was because of me we didn't win this game.
"I'm happy for the work of the team but we have to move on - that is the life of a goalkeeper. We didn't win today because of me.
"Their first shot on target, I made a mistake, so the team went down because of that mistake. I have to learn, be strong and move on although it's not an easy situation. I'm happy with the comeback of the team, we were fighting until the end."
Since his move from Inter Milan during the off-season, Onana has already conceded 14 goals during his six appearances, keeping just the one clean sheet.
United are next in action when they make the short trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley on Saturday evening. body check tags ::
