UEFA confirm length of Marcus Rashford's Champions League ban

UEFA have confirmed that Marcus Rashford will be suspended for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Galatasaray next week, but he will be available for the contest against Bayern Munich.

The England international was sent off in the first half of his side's group-stage fixture with Copenhagen earlier this month after catching defender Elias Jelert when he attempted to protect the ball.

The referee did not initially blow for a foul, but he reviewed the incident at the pitch-side monitor and ultimately handed Rashford a red card in Denmark.

Man United were 2-0 ahead at the time, with Rasmus Hojlund netting a brace, but the sending-off changed the match, with the English side ultimately suffering a 4-3 defeat.

Erik ten Hag's side are currently at the bottom of Group A on three points, one point behind both third-placed Galatasaray and second-placed Copenhagen with two games left.

There had been fears that Rashford's European ban could be extended past one match, but UEFA have confirmed that the forward will only be unavailable against Galatasaray.

As a result, he will be able to feature in the team's final Group A game with Bayern at Old Trafford next month, which could be decisive when it comes to making the next round of the competition.

"I felt that it was high, but no free kick was awarded to begin with," Copenhagen's Jelert told Bold after the European game earlier this month.

"I don't think he was after me. He tried to shield the ball but his foot ended up quite high. I could feel that it landed pretty hard. It was enough for a red card."

Man United head coach Ten Hag said after the clash with Copenhagen that Rashford was unfortunate to receive his marching orders.

"The red card was harsh. [Rashford] went for the ball, but the referee had such a long time to make it a red card. When you freeze it, it always looks worse. They took so long to make a red card of it," he told reporters at the time.

"I'm very disappointed with the decisions, the game was never meant to be like this. Decisions have to be made, wrong decisions can be made, but three such tough decisions [went against us]."

Rashford has found it difficult to show his best form for the Red Devils this season, only managing one goal and three assists in 16 appearances in all competitions.

The Englishman will be back in action against Everton on Sunday afternoon, with Man United bidding to make it five wins from their last six Premier League matches. body check tags ::
