How Manchester United could line up against Sheriff Tiraspol

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Manchester United could line up for Thursday's Europa League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol in Group E.

Manchester United have lost Raphael Varane to injury ahead of Thursday's Europa League Group E tie with Sheriff Tiraspol at Stamford Bridge.

The France centre-back was in tears after sustaining the knee problem in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, and there are fears that he will not play for the club again before the World Cup.

With Harry Maguire yet to play since sustaining a hamstring injury, Victor Lindelof is primed to deputise alongside Lisandro Martinez, while David de Gea continues in between the sticks.

Needing just a point to seal a top-two finish and place in the knockout rounds, Erik ten Hag should stick with a strong XI, with Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw occupying the full-back roles.

Scott McTominay scored a late winner against Omonia in his side's most recent European game before coming on to give away a penalty against Chelsea, so his chances of displacing Casemiro or Christian Eriksen in the midfield are slim - the same goes for Fred after an underwhelming substitute outing at Stamford Bridge.

Jadon Sancho endured another disappointing afternoon against Chelsea but should hold off the threat of Anthony Elanga out wide, as Antony and Bruno Fernandes also take their spots in the final third.

One of Cristiano Ronaldo's two goals this season came against Sheriff in Moldova, but he is back in the squad after being dropped in the wake of his refusal to play against Tottenham Hotspur. In any case, Marcus Rashford will expect to lead the line.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek will both be in contention for this game alongside Maguire, but Brandon Williams, Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe are all out.

Man United possible starting lineup: De Gea; Dalot, Lindelof, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Rashford body check tags ::
