Manchester United's FA Cup drought shocks Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling admits that he is "shocked" by Manchester United's recent failings in the FA Cup.

Chris Smalling has expressed his shock at the fact that Manchester United have not won the FA Cup since 2004.

No team has won the competition more times than the Red Devils, but they have failed to lift the trophy since they defeated Millwall in the final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium nine years ago.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's final-16 tie against Reading, Smalling has admitted that it is a wait that the squad are keen to end.

"There are quite a lot of lads who haven't won it, despite being here for a while. It's a competition I've watched since I was growing up and I look forward to it," he is quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"I was quite shocked at how long it has been since United won the FA Cup. This club has always been successful. Luckily we have another good draw, at home to Reading, and we need to make it count.

"I don't think any game is a foregone conclusion. You have seen in the league a lot of teams down at the bottom have beaten a lot of teams at the top. It will be a difficult one but we are confident because we are playing at home."

United have lost in two finals since they last won the trophy.
