United dominated proceedings after the goal and created another chance on 15 minutes through a dangerous low cross from Wilfried Zaha, but it was well defended by Wigan.
Zaha continued to cause problems down the right-hand side, using his pace to trouble the Wigan defence.
Wigan began to play themselves into the game and came close on 32 minutes through a superb James McClean cross, but no-one could find the finishing touch.
