Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino is forced off after 31 minutes of his side's Premier League clash with Manchester United after picking up an ankle injury.

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has been forced off after just 31 minutes of his side's Premier League showdown with Manchester United.

The Brazilian appeared to twist his ankle while playing a pass at Old Trafford, and despite trying to carry on he was soon withdrawn by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Firmino was replaced by Daniel Sturridge, who was chosen ahead of the likes of Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana from Liverpool's bench.

United were hit even harder by injuries during a remarkable first half, though, as they were forced into all three changes before the interval.

Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard - the latter of whom had come on as a replacement for Mata - all limped off as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became the first manager to make three first-half substitutions in a Premier League game since January 2015.

The disruption contributed to a goalless first half at Old Trafford in a match which could see Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League table.
