Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says that bringing through promising youngsters is something that he has done wherever he has managed.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that he has always looked to nurture promising youngsters wherever he has managed.

The United boss fielded several academy graduates, including Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and James Wilson, in the League Cup match against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night, although his side were beaten 3-1 on penalties at Old Trafford following a goalless draw.

Van Gaal has stated that he will continue to show faith in the younger players because it is something that United have done successfully in the past.

"It has always been part of my own philosophy and that of the club to give opportunities to youth players," the Dutchman told United's official website.

"Jesse Lingard is one of those players who was given a chance to play in the last three matches and he has taken that opportunity to show what he is capable of and to prove that he deserves to be a member of the first-team squad.

"I have been delighted with the progress that he continues to make, along with Andreas Pereira, who played against Ipswich Town and scored his first senior competitive goal."

United travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
