Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has praised Adam Johnson for his performance as they beat Manchester United 2-1 in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final at the Stadium of Light.
Johnson won a second-half penalty after he was brought by down Tom Cleverley's challenge, and the Uruguayan coach talked up the winger's display.
He told Sky Sports News: "Johnson made my day. We want him to do well and we've been waiting for him to do it, he went in and changed the game for us. I'm delighted with him.
"It was tight, and there was not a better team in the game if you analyse it. It's very tight and one decision can turn the game for you, and you're winning.
"It's a great advantage to have and we go to Old Trafford with the extra goal."
The second leg will be played towards the end of the month.
