Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag hailed Marcus Rashford following the attacker's brilliant solo goal against Burnley in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old was in strong form for England at the 2022 World Cup, scoring three times in five appearances, while he netted his ninth club goal of the campaign in the 2-0 success over Burnley at Old Trafford.

Rashford carried the ball from inside his own half to the away side's penalty box on Wednesday before firing an unstoppable strike into the far corner of the net.

Ten Hag said that the forward is currently "on a very good level", having also been in impressive form ahead of the international tournament in Qatar.

"I think he invested a lot once again with a lot of runs behind the defending line and he scored a great goal in the dribble, great finish," Ten Hag told Sky Sports News. "I think he is in great form and of course I hope he can keep his focus and this performance.

"I think he is on a very good level, his performances are improving a lot from game to game. He's a continued threat but also many other games this season he's scored a lot of goals and does a lot of defending work.

"So I'm really happy with his performances. I hope and expect him to keep going with his performance level."

Ten Hag also said that he was pleased with his team's performance against Burnley, who entered the contest off the back of four straight wins and sitting at the top of the Championship.

"You never know, it's always difficult after an international break, especially when they are five weeks not playing together," he added.

"I don't think this team that we put on the pitch ever played together. But they played our principles and our rules of football and I am pleased with the performance and the win.

"We scored two goals, we had to score many more goals, a clean sheet, although we also created some good chances for them I would say.

"But from this point on we have to step up, we have to do better, we have great ambitions and we have to do better against [Nottingham] Forest, that's clear."

Man United will be back in Premier League action against Forest on December 27 before ending the year away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The majority of the team's players that were involved in the World Cup have now returned, although Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been given extra time off following the final. body check tags ::
