Cristiano Ronaldo's record vs. Manchester City

Ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby, Sports Mole looks at Cristiano Ronaldo's record against Manchester City from 15 previous meetings across all competitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo could be set to make a rare Premier League start for Manchester United under Erik ten Hag when they make the short trip to face Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

The 37-year-old has only been named in the starting XI once domestically so far this season, and that was the 4-0 defeat to Brentford on August 13.

Since then, and with Ronaldo reduced to a watching brief from the outset, Man United have won four league games on the bounce, including victories over Liverpool and Arsenal, and they will look claim another high-profile scalp this weekend.

Lingering injury concerns over Anthony Martial and newly-crowned September player of the month Marcus Rashford mean that Ronaldo could start that game, and here Sports Mole looks at how he has fared against Man City in the past.

Over the course of his two spells at Manchester United, Ronaldo has featured in 12 derbies against Man City overall, winning seven of those with four defeats and one draw.

However, his goal record in those games is slightly less impressive than against most other opponents throughout his illustrious career, with Ronaldo scoring four times in those 12 outings, in addition to registering one assist.

Injury ruled him out of Man United's 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium the last time the two sides met in March, but he played 90 goalless minutes in the 2-0 loss at Old Trafford last November.

Ronaldo's last goal against Man City in a Manchester United shirt came towards the end of his first spell at Old Trafford when he netted in a 2-0 home win in May 2009.

That is one of three Premier League goals he has scored against the reigning champions overall, with the other two - including his only previous strike at the Etihad - coming in the 2006-07 campaign.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner does also have an FA Cup goal against Man City to his name, though, netting in a 4-2 fifth-round triumph at Old Trafford in February 2004 - his first ever goal against the Citizens.

Ronaldo also faced off against Man City three times in the Champions League during his prolific spell at Real Madrid, scoring once in a group-stage win at the Bernabeu in September 2012.

The Portuguese talisman was also part of the Madrid side that edged past Man City over two legs in the 2015-16 Champions League semi-finals, although he missed the first leg through injury and drew a blank in the second.

Including the Madrid matches, in total Ronaldo has therefore won nine of his 15 previous meetings with Man City, drawing twice, losing four times, scoring five goals and registering one assist. body check tags ::
