A 0-0 draw from their home match with Manchester United this afternoon has resulted in Hull City being relegated from the Premier League.

The Tigers went into the contest at the KC Stadium knowing that only a win would give them a chance of jumping out of the bottom of three, although Newcastle United's victory over West Ham United meant that no matter what result Hull achieved, they were going down.

Here, Sports Mole has looked back over the encounter on Humberside to determine if it was a fair result, or whether one of these sides deserved the victory.

Was the result fair?

Hull needed to win this match and to their credit, they were positive, so much so that if either side deserved to win the encounter, it was the hosts. In truth, it was a poor game to watch and a draw was arguably a fair outcome, but you couldn't have begrudged the home side all three points.

Hull's performance

If ever a display summed up Hull's campaign, this was it. They created a number of good chances and openings, but when it really mattered, the quality was lacking in the final third.

In total, Hull scored 33 goals in their 38 outings - only three other sides scored less. That lack of a clincial touch is what prevented them from winning through today, just as it has been over recent months.

On paper, the Tigers have some good players and they've certainly spent some decent money, but it hasn't worked out. Today, when they needed players to take charge, no-one in an attacking sense was forthcoming.

Man United's performance

Louis van Gaal insisted that his players would show no mercy, despite the fact that they had little to play for.

However, it seemed as though that message did not get through to his squad. They were lacklustre from the first whistle and rarely had a shot, let alone worked Steve Harper in the Hull goal.

Talking of goalkeepers, it wasn't the most impressive of full debuts from Victor Valdes. He made a couple of decent saves, but he looked suspect to crosses into the box. If David de Gea is bound for Madrid, Van Gaal is going to need a new number one.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Robbie Brady: No player stood out above the rest, except perhaps Brady. Playing in the wing-back role, the former United trainee got forward well for Hull and sent over a host of dangerous crosses. It wouldn't be a surprise if there was clubs looking to keep him in the Premier League next season.

Biggest gaffe

This can go to United substitute Marouane Fellaini, who was not off the bench for long when he was red carded for a nasty challenge on Paul McShane. Not only was it a needless act from the Belgian, it also means that he will be suspended for the first three games of next season.

Referee performance

Lee Probert had one big decision to make and he got it right by showing Fellaini a straight red card. His assistant in the United half of the pitch should also be credited for getting a couple of big offside calls correct during the opening 45 minutes.

Hull: It's going to be an uncertain summer at the KC Stadium, with the future of manager Steve Bruce and many of his players currently up in the air.

Man United: As for Van Gaal, he will reportedly spend big over the next few months as United look to strengthen enough to challenge for the title next season.
