Ander Herrera: 'Derby defeat is painful'

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says that Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City was "painful".

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has admitted that Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Manchester derby was "painful".

Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck before the interval to hand Man United hope of a comeback after goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho had sent the away side into a two-goal lead.

However, the Red Devils could not find an equaliser as they suffered their first defeat of the new campaign.

Herrera, who was introduced at the interval, has admitted that the defeat was "disappointing", but is confident that his team will bounce back in the weeks ahead.

"It is disappointing for us. We are unhappy. We have lost a derby in front of our fans and it is painful," Herrera told BBC Sport. "We have to be balanced in our analysis. This is the first game we have not played the best. We crossed a lot of balls and put them under pressure.

"We have to take some good things. The attitude and spirit in the second half was fantastic. City will lose points as well. We are three points off the top and we want to be champions. We didn't start well. Every duel went for them. We have to study why that happened. But we have played well so far."

Man United's next Premier League match is away to Watford next weekend.
