Manchester United reportedly want manager Louis van Gaal to prove that he is worthy of a new contract at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman, who replaced David Moyes last year, will come to the end of his current deal in the summer of 2017.
In his first season at the North-West outfit, Van Gaal was able to push the club back into the Champions League after they fell to seventh in the previous campaign, but he was unable to clinch silverware.
According to the Daily Star, Van Gaal is keen to extend his stay at United, but the club's hierarchy will only open negotiations if they are pleased with what the team achieve by the end of the season.
It is believed that a new deal will be discussed as long as the team improve on last season's fourth-place finish and a trophy is won.
