Former Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney could prolong his career by moving into midfield in the future.

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes believes that Wayne Rooney can extend his playing career by becoming a midfielder in the future.

The 29-year-old made several appearances in the middle of the park for United last season and despite saying he is England's best striker, Moyes believes he could play as a central midfielder after his 'legs run out a bit.'

The Scotsman told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek: "I think while he is probably England's best striker at the moment, he has to continue playing as a striker and scoring goals.

"But I could genuinely see Wayne being a midfield player for a year or two after that - I think he has got that ability when his legs run out a bit.

"He is such a good footballer and passer of the ball that he could play in other positions and it could be that he steps back [positionally] in time."

Rooney equaled Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goalscoring record for England yesterday after scoring a penalty against San Marino.
