Sports Mole previews Sunday's La Liga clash between Las Palmas and Getafe, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Las Palmas will be aiming to stretch their unbeaten run in La Liga to five matches when they welcome Getafe to Estadio Gran Canaria on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts are currently 13th in the La Liga table, picking up 22 points from their opening 18 matches of the campaign, while Getafe sit 17th, having only collected 16 points from their first 18 games of 2024-25.

Match preview

Diego Martinez has guided Las Palmas to eight wins from his 12 matches in charge since being appointed head coach at the start of October, with the team recovering from what was a very difficult opening to the 2024-25 campaign.

Pio Pio ended 2024 in impressive form in La Liga, picking up 10 points from an available 12, with that run including a 2-1 success over Barcelona, and they are currently up in 13th position in the table.

Los Amarillos are actually only three points behind seventh-placed Real Sociedad, which is remarkable considering their early-season struggles, and they will be eyeing a seventh league success of the campaign on Sunday afternoon.

Martinez's team will enter this match off the back of a defeat, going down 4-0 to Elche in the Copa del Rey, meaning that they now only have the league to focus on in the second half of the campaign.

Las Palmas have only won four of their 14 matches against Getafe in all competitions, but they recorded a 2-0 success when the two teams locked horns for the corresponding match during the 2023-24 campaign.

Getafe, meanwhile, sit 17th in the table, boasting a record of three wins, seven draws and eight defeats from their 18 matches, and they are only one point ahead of the relegation zone heading into the latest gameweek.

Jose Bordalas's side incredibly have the third-best defensive record in La Liga this season, only conceding 15 times, but they have the worst attacking record, finding the back of the net on just 11 occasions.

It is therefore not difficult to understand why Getafe are struggling this term, but they will enter this match off the back of a win, beating Granada 1-0 in the Copa del Rey on January 3 to secure a spot in the last-16 stage of the competition.

Getafe ended 2024 with back-to-back 1-0 losses to Atletico Madrid and Mallorca in La Liga, though, and they have only picked up three points from their last four matches in the top flight of Spanish football.

The Deep Blue Ones have picked up just two points from their eight away league matches this season, scoring only three times in the process, while Las Palmas have 12 points to show from their nine games on home soil.

Team News

Las Palmas will be without the services of Viti and Daley Sinkgraven due to injury problems, but the home side are otherwise in strong shape for their opening La Liga match of 2025.

Head coach Martinez made a number of changes against Elche in the Copa del Rey last time out, but the big-hitters, including Kirian Rodriguez, Mika Marmol, Jasper Cillessen and Alex Suarez will return here.

Fabio Silva is again set to feature through the middle, while Marvin Park should be back in an advanced area, having dropped back to the right-back spot for the Copa del Rey contest on January 5.

As for Getafe, Diego Rico is out of the contest through suspension, while Allan Nyom is absent through injury, but Borja Mayoral and Carles Alena were both involved against Granada after returning from recent injuries.

The visitors will be careful when it comes to Mayoral's fitness considering his recent injury problems, so the Spaniard could start on the bench once again, but Alena may take advantage of Nyom's absence to start.

David Soria is also set to return between the sticks, having been rested in the Copa del Rey, but Coba should keep his spot down the right for the capital outfit this weekend.

Las Palmas possible starting lineup:
Cillessen; Munoz, Suarez, McKenna, Marmol; Essugo, Campana, K Rodriguez; Park, F Silva, Ramirez

Getafe possible starting lineup:
Soria; Iglesias, Dakonam, Alderete, Duarte; Arambarri, Milla; Alena, Uche, Coba; Yildirim

We say: Las Palmas 1-0 Getafe

Getafe have just three away goals to their name in La Liga this season, so we are not expecting a high-scoring affair; Las Palmas were stunned by Elche in the Copa del Rey last time out, but we are backing the hosts to bounce back on Sunday with a narrow win.
